Porch Cushions That Survive Sun and Rain

Porch Cushions That Survive Sun and Rain

Cushions make a porch comfortable, and they also take the most weather. A few choices up front keep them from fading or staying soggy after a storm.

  1. Pick outdoor fabric. Look for fabric made for outdoor use. Solution-dyed fabric has the color all the way through the fiber, so it holds up better in the sun.
  2. Check the fill. Quick-dry foam lets water run through and dries faster than regular foam. Fiber-filled cushions are soft but can stay wet longer.
  3. Get removable covers. A zipper means you can wash the cover and let the insert dry on its own.
  4. Look for ties or straps. They keep cushions on the chair when the wind picks up or someone hops off the swing.
  5. Measure the seat. Measure the width and depth of each seat and the height of the back. A cushion that hangs over the edge wears out faster.
  6. Match the cushion to the seat. A swing or a bench usually wants one long cushion, while a rocker does better with a seat pad and a back pad that tie on separately.
  7. Dry them the right way. After rain, stand cushions on their edge so the water drains out. Flip them now and then so both sides fade evenly.
  8. Store them when you can. A deck box or a covered spot keeps them out of long rainy spells and winter weather.
